Bull Lease
Bull Lease Program Overview
I selectively offer breeding services for other peoples’ heifers and cows to my bull, Beeson’s Sure Shot Stoli, a registered mini Jersey bull. This is referred to as a "bull lease." Stoli is A2/A2, heterozygous polled, painted (meaning he is fawn and white), and has a wonderful pedigree. His DNA is on file with UC Davis, so offspring can have parentage confirmed via DNA, if the owner desires. He has also been disease tested by a vet and was negative for Brucellosis, BLV, BVD, and Johnes. He is registered with IMCBR, AMJA, and AJCA.
The cow/heifer typically stays at my farm for approximately 45-60 days and then a pregnancy check by a vet is performed. The owner can use a vet of his/her choosing or use my vet, Rose Hill Veterinary Practice out of Washington, VA.
If the cow/heifer is not pregnant at the time of the first vet check, the cow/heifer can stay for an additional two months for an additional fee.
I've only hosted a handful of cows and heifers in the past for a bull lease and all have been wonderful experiences with the cow or heifer leaving the farm healthy and pregnant. However, we are dealing with live animals and things can happen. So the guidelines below are provided to ensure transparency and that the owner and I are on the same page.
Cow & Heifer Requirements
The requirements are as follows:
-
Current disease testing by a vet for Brucellosis, BLV, BVD, and Johnes. Also, a TB test and a health certificate if coming from out of state. The results of the disease testing must be provided to me prior to arrival.
-
The cow/heifer’s owner must deliver the cow/heifer to my farm on an agreed upon date. The cow/heifer’s owner will ensure that the trailer the animal(s) are traveling in has been disinfected prior to loading the owner’s cow/heifer(s).
-
Cow/heifer must be actively cycling.
-
Cow/heifer must be at least 15 months old.
-
Owner must ensure the cow/heifer is in good and appropriate condition for a dairy cow prior to arrival. A cow/heifer that is severely underweight or overweight may have difficulty getting pregnant.
-
Owner is responsible for any feed costs (above pasture and first cut horse-quality timothy/orchard hay).
-
Owner is responsible for any vet costs incurred for the cow/heifer.
-
Owner must disclose if the cow/heifer has been with a bull in the past.
-
Owner must provide 50% payment for the initial 60 days prior to or on the day of arrival via cash, Venmo, or Zelle and is non-refundable. The remaining 50% is due prior to or on the day of pick-up via cash, Venmo, or Zelle and is non-refundable, except for the following: if the cow/heifer is injured or becomes sick and the owner wants to pick-up the cow/heifer, he/she may do that and only a pro-rated amount for the time remaining before the 60 days has expired will be due to me by the owner.
-
Owner must pick-up the cow/heifer on the agreed-upon date, which should be no longer than 1-2 weeks after the expiration of the initial 60 days or extended term.
Cost – First 60 Days
The cost per cow/heifer is $500 for up to the first 60 days the cow/heifer is at the farm. This includes:
-
Assistance unloading the cow/heifer upon arrival.
-
Pasturing the cow/heifer with my bull, Beeson’s Sure Shot Stoli for up to 60 days.
-
Feeding pasture grass and/or first cut horse-quality timothy and/or orchard grass hay and fresh water at all times.
-
Daily visual checks by a person.
-
Applying a fly spray and/or pour-on as necessary, unless specifically requested not to by the owner.
-
Corralling and holding the cow for the initial vet pregnancy check.
-
Corralling and assistance while loading the cow for departure.
Cost – After 60 Days
If after the initial pregnancy check the cow/heifer is not confirmed pregnant by the vet, the cow/heifer may remain at the farm with the bull for up to two additional months at a cost of $150 each month and includes the items mentioned above.
The Fine Print
While Stoli is very good at his job, there is no guarantee that the cow/heifer will get pregnant. Also, live cover breeding can be dangerous to both the bull and cow/heifer, causing injury or even death to either.
If the cow/heifer jumps out of the fenced paddock area, I have a right to terminate the bull lease and the owner must pick-up the cow/heifer within three days. No amount will be refunded.
If the cow/heifer is aggressive and presents a safety hazard to me, I have a right to terminate the bull lease and the owner must pick-up the cow/heifer within three days. No amount will be refunded.
